Why Preparation Beats Confidence: An Introvert's Antidote to Imposter Syndrome

Lee Schneider · Episode 73 · June 22, 2026

Communicate Like a Leader Lee Schneider

Lee Schneider is a writer, producer, and USC storytelling instructor whose career has run through journalism, off-Broadway theater, television, and startup consulting. His central contribution to the show is the idea of **containers** — pre-set rules, roles, and time limits that make extroverted situations survivable and even enjoyable for someone who is nourished by being alone. From there he and Greg build out a practical craft of public speaking for introverts: preparation as the antidote to imposter syndrome, getting "off book" the way an actor does, reading the room the way a playwright watches an early rehearsal, and using story structure to make a pitch land. He closes on embodiment — that the brain isn't something you carry around in a paper bag, and physical comfort in a space does more for performance anxiety than willpower does.

A characteristic of introversion is imposter syndrome sometimes. And the antidote is preparation.
If I'm going to a party where I know no one, that's a tough container… I'll stay an hour and if I don't end up talking to anyone, I give myself permission to leave.
The only way I know what I'm talking about is if I can speak freely about it… That is the true test of, am I really supposed to be here?
It's so much easier to put yourself in charge, which is a very interesting technique.
Extroverts are naturally performative… as an introvert, it's a dividing line between the regular you and the performance you. And I think that's okay.
We're narrative animals.
Only you know if you missed something. The audience never knows if you forgot to say something.
Your body's not a paper bag that you carry the brain around in.
If you're coming from a genuine place, that generally solves so many problems.
